Show BIRD EXPLAINS DISTRIBUTION OF RX FLOUR G. W. Mcndenhall, chairman of the local Red Cross organization, is in receipt of the following letter in regard to the distribution of Red Cross wheat and flour: "We have reports from chapters indicating that there are two views on the part of their people as to the, use of government wheat and flour. "1. That the wheat and flour are for general distribution to ail those who can advantageously use them. . "2. That the wheat and flour -are to be used only to supplement other forms of relief, the need for whicV has been very -definitely establish by visits to the families. "Relief workers, community lead-. -ers and business men are urging a rigid adherence to the. latter policy because of the very demoralizing effect'of the former on both business busi-ness and the individual served. Red Cross policy and social service prac- tice also dictate the extreme unwisdom unwis-dom of a free. use of government-: provided relief. "This office will rigidly adhere to these requests and will approve only those applications based upon sound relief procedure which will assure that wheat and flour reach the 'needy and distressed,' but only these. Will you please be guided by these directions"? A. L. Schafer, manager." In this connection President J. E. Bird says: "I feel that the above instructions have been strictly adhered to by our local Red . Cross chapter. A thorough investigation of the needs of all persons receiving this aid has been made by those in charge and Red Cross receipts have been signed and are now on file for all wheat and flour distributed. Although Al-though our policy has been to conserve con-serve our supply of wheat and flour for the coming winter, all worthy cases have been taken care of promptly. We ask that the people of our community cooperate . with us in order that we may comply strictly with the above instructions |
