Show iSlhi Blast Occurs Deep in the Workings of Colorado Coal Property. TRINIDAD, Colo., Aug. IS. Nineteen or twenty men are believed dead, buried under tho debris from the explosion at 11 o'clock this morning in the Oakvlew mine of the Oakdala Coal company near La Veta. Colo. At 6 o'clock tonight five rescue crews had been unable to recover anv of the bodies. Fumes from the gas explosion tonight filled tho mine and several rescuers were overcome and were revived with difficulty. Owing to the wrecked condition of the mine, and gas fumes, it was considered doubtfiil whether the full death list could be learWed tonight. Approximately forty men were In the mine when the explosion occurred, including in-cluding Fife Boss. William Christopher. Ten men escaped from the mine through the main slope after the explosion and ten others made their way to the surface through an adjoining mine. William Davis, a miner, one of those overcame by the explosion, recovered sufficiently to make his wav to the surface. Nono of the others has been heard from. The explosion occurred about a mile and a half in the workings of the mine. Tonight tearful throngs of women and children relatives of the missing men eagerlv awaited at the mine for word from the rescue crews. Volunteer rescue crews came from the Walsenburg and Trinidad districts, and mine'officials said the rescue attempts would be continued all "'ilhie officials are checking a list of their employees In an effort to learn just how many men there are In the mine.
