Spider Spi-der Baum and Buzz Arlott hooked up in a great tup;-of-war thig afternoon, Spider winning a shutout and the Bees winning tho opening open-ing game 1 to 0. In spite of the muddy field it was as pretty an exhibition of baseball as. has been seen here in a long time. Only two Oaks got as far as second bare on Baum, and he allowed only five hits. But six balls were hit outside tho diamond dia-mond on the veteran. Arlclt was almost as effective as his adversary, although he was a trifle more liberal in his hit allowance. He was strong in the emergencies. Ernie Johnson played a wonderful game at short. He accepted eight changes in the mud, which, taking conditions con-ditions into account, was a remarkablo afternoon's work. Johnson also stolo a base in ooze ankle-deep and because he did steal that base, the Bees got their tally. The visitors made the sole scor.7 of . the game in the fifth. Johnson singled and Krug sacrificed him to second, lie stole third and scored on Sheely's fly to Wilie. 1 Bill Guthrie was he only umpire on tine .iob today, his partner, Ed Finney, being laid up.
