Show HIKE STATE EETSJKl SAN FRANCISCO, Sept. 30. Senator Hiram Johnson was acclaimed vociferously vocifer-ously by hundreds of his townspeople who met him as he arrived in San Francisco tonight to combat the league of nations covenant in his homo city and native state. Senator Johnson's train was more than threo hours late, but notwithstanding this the Ferry building and the embarcadero surrounding it was black with friends and townspeople who had waited to receive him. As he-passed through an aisle of people peo-ple to a stand erected outside the Ferry building for him to be officially welcomed by Mayor James Roiph, the senator repeatedly re-peatedly shook hands with old friends and acquaintances. As he progressed, cheers went up and many persons called out: "Hurrah for our next president!" At tho reception stand Senator Johnson was greeted with long cheering from those who had waited outside the building. build-ing. Here he briefly told tho object of his visit. "I am here, my friends," said the senator, sen-ator, "to preach to you the doctrine that this country of ours is for Americans, and to ask you to unite with me and with the other men in Washingotn who are making mak-ing the good fight there, with us, that there shall- be no khaki-clad boys of ours sent to fight in foreign lands, wars that are no concern of ours." Senator Johnson's first program appearance ap-pearance before his townspeople will take placo tomorrow noon at a luncheon of business clubs. The senator will leave San Francisco for southern California Thursday night to make further addresses. Following his California tour Senator Johnson is to speak in Portland, Ore., and Seattle and Spokane, Wash., going from there to Salt Lake. From Salt Lake, if time is found, Senator Johnson plans to attempt to return to Reno, Nov., another city visited by President Wilson, to speak against the league. Denver, Colo., also is on his itinerary. |
