Show ACCUSED OF SELLING IITBI11 LIQUOR Alpine Man in Trouble Over Selling Cider That Would Not Behave. Special to The Tribune. PROVO, May 9. William Bateman, a prominent resident of Alpine, was arrested arrest-ed yesterday and brought to Provo on a charge of selling intoxicating liquor. According Ac-cording to the officers, Bateman sold a ten-gallon barrel of cider to- Clarence Nash, which Nash is alleged to have consumed con-sumed a little at a time until lie became intoxicated. When arrested he shot at an officer, which offense landed him in the state prison. Bateman was arraigned before Judge E. L. Jones yesterday and entered a plea of not guilty. He was released upon his own recognizance. Mr. Bateman stated that he was innocent inno-cent of having committed any offense when he sold the cider to Nash, and declared de-clared that it was sweet cider, ; which he did not believe to be intoxicating. The state prohibition law provides that one must have avlicense from the secretary of state before he can sell cider, and even then a test of the cider must be made before it may be sold. Mr. Bateman says he was not aware of these provisions and declares he had no intention of violating the law. i |
