Show COWS FOR FRANCE. The French high commission has just completed negotiations for the first lot of thoroughbred dairy cattle to be exported ex-ported to France, The consignment consists con-sists of 108 head of Holstein Friesian stock 2 pure breds and 66 grades. They will be transported across the Atlantic in a specially equipped transport, trans-port, and will be landed at Havre. From : there they will be sent to the devastated districts, where they will do their bit in bringing back health and happiness to the children of those regions. Great care was exercised in selecting the cattle, only those proving absolutely free from contagious disease being chosen. Of the entire number taken from forty-two herd's, a very low percentage per-centage reacted to the tuberculin test. Only well-grown, large, strong animals ani-mals were picked, and only those which showed- evidence of becoming good milk producers. In ago they range from two to four and one-half years, so that there is a long period of usefulness ahead of them. The stock was shipped to New York by express. An expert of the department depart-ment of agriculture will accompany the animals on the sea voyage. There is little doubt that the. experiment experi-ment of importing American dairy stock into France will prove successful, and the first shipment unquestionably will lie followed by other and larger herds. By supplying cattle to France, the United Unit-ed States is adding another to' its list of services to a sister republic. |
