HAVIXG read, while on the road during tlio last two weeks, that the country is going to be in the grip of a coal famine next win-tnrj win-tnrj Earl Sheely proceeded to add to his.-. . supply yesterday afternoon by knocking the ball over the fence. Earl also has been without candy for the Inst two weeks, and he stocked up with a five-pound box of sweetmeats also. Incidentally, Earl won the game, Rising Salt Lake tho victory over Portland Port-land in' the eleventh inning. Earl was first, batter up in that round, and he picked the first fling from the long arm of Lefty Schroeder to decide tho issue: Everybody was glad he did it, because folks wanted to go home to supper. They had seen quite a sufficiency suffi-ciency of baseball for one day. In . Bunches of Four. Proviousty the Beavers and the Bees had. made their runs in bunches of four. At one time the Beavers were four runs to the good, and the Bees tied 'om. Then the Bees were four rune to the good, and tho Beavers tied 'cm. Lefty Leverenz started the flinging for Salt Lake, but he lost control in the:, third inning and passed on. Jean Dale took a full house, and after he shook off that, inning he flung superior su-perior ball until tho eighth when the Beavers bunched three hits with a walk and an error for four runs. Harvey Sutherland started the pitch-ing.for pitch-ing.for tho Beavers. He suffered for the ins of his mates, or, rather, for the misfortunes of his mates, in the sixth inning, when the Bees took their fniir-run lead. First, Tex Westerzil foil over the cover of a drainage well and lost a little fly ball, and next Don Kader and Billy Speas got, crossed on a fly. Sutherland was taken out for a pinch hitter in the eighth and Lefty Schroeder, a voung webfooter, pitched no-hit ball until the eleventh when Sheely made his noble bust. Some Slick Fielding. A chapter on fielding might be writ-ten; writ-ten; so spectacular was some of the , playing. Ernie Johnson at short, Har-' Har-' fey' Maggert in center, Wally Smith at ' second and Butch Byler behind the bat . plaved great baseball for Salt Lake. ; Stops by Johnson and throwing by i Byler were distinct features. Royal i Bine,1 at first, Dick Cox in right, Billy ; Spoas in left and Paddy Siglin at sec- ond did Borne mighty clever work for McCredio. The Bees opened with one in the i first inning, and that kind of a. start ' is always more or less jinxful for the Salt Lakers on the home lot. Maggert ! walked and Smith sacrificed him to : Becond. Ho went to third on Mulvey 'a out and scored on Rumler 's double to center. Rumler went to third on a wild pitch and Sheely walked, but both dibd. Tho Beavers made two in the second. sec-ond. Siglin led off with a twobagger to right center and Baker and Rader walked, filling the bases. Cox flied tof Smith, who made a neat catch of it- Sutherland singled to right. Rumler" Rum-ler" made a fine try for a catch, but was half an inch short. Siglin scored on' the hit. Baker counted when Sutherland Suth-erland was forced at second. Beavers Streak Out. The visitors made four in the third, three of them being forced across by excessive bases on balls and one scored on a sacrifice fly. The inning started with Mulligan booting Speas' groujider. Next Mulligan and Levorenz . got tangled on Walker's bunt. Siftlin shot a single through third, and the bases were full. A walk for Baker forced in Speas. With three balls on Rader. Dale replaced Leverenz and finished walking the batBman. That forced in Walker. Cox fanned, much to his disgust dis-gust and equally to the delight of the populace. Sutherand lifted a fly to center, on which Siglin scored. Walks for Blue and Westerzil forced in Baker with the fourth run of the inning and the bases were full when Speas, upon the occasion of his second appearance for the round, grounded to Smith. The Bees made one in the fourth, Rumler drove the ball into deep center for three bases and scored on Sheely 'b single. Bees Tie and Win. The locals tied the score with four in the fifth. Dale led off with a hit and Maggert walked. Smith hit to Sutherland who made a play for Maggert Mag-gert at second, but was too late. That filled the bases. After Mulvey had skied, Rumler forced Smith, Dale scoring. scor-ing. Sheely knocked the ball into left, scoring Maggert. Johnson knocked it into right scoring Rumler and taking second on the throw. Mulligan's hit scored Sheely and put Johnson on third. An attempted double steal was frustrated, Johnson being out at the plate. I The Bees took four in the sixth, j which put them four to the good.
