Show JIM AIRPLANE IDE MICE New Machine Weighs Only 120 Pounds and Will Carry Two Persons. Registers Speed of 140 Miles at Recent Test Made in Paris. By Universal Service. I PARIS, Doc. 13. An airplane weighing weigh-ing only 120 pounds, capable of carrying carry-ing two persona at the rate of 140 miles per hour! Believed impossible, ncorned at as impracticable, such a macliino has already received successful trials at an airdrome in the vicinity of Paris. The inventor is a French engineer named Archer, famous as the inventor of tho light cannon used by infantry with great success in tho later days of the war. IIo has patented the macliino ma-cliino in his own name, but has announced an-nounced his intention of donating it to the government. The plane is a tiny thing, with a wing-spread less than that of a Spad. It can be comfortably picked up and carried by one man. A small electric motor ot eight horsepower provides the power to drive the one propeller. The machine can stay in the air more than an hour. Inventor Confident. "My invention is such that it can be produced in great quantity and sold at a very low price," Archer told the Universal .Service. 1 ' If'the government will permit me- for it has the refusal of tho airplane first I shall establish a factory near Paris and make Archer-planes Archer-planes at the rate of 10U0 a day. "In one year I expect one out of livery icn aou'ooiiiea men in franco to ! be a possible purchaser for my machine. (Even u boy or girl of average strength I could easily handle it. Jt can 'take off from a small garden or roadway, and can land in a space much smaller than the ordinary airplane. The carrying power is such that farmers will be able to bring their produce to market straight from the market garden, say 3U0 miles from Paris to the central markets at the capital, with only one landing, nnd in only two hours. "American investors will not be slow to see the advantages of the air jitney, jit-ney, and negotiations will be opened shortly, with a view to supplying 10,000 machines to New York for the use of commuters. American promoters with whom I have talked say that my invention in-vention will put the ferryboat and the suburban train service out of business, , except for old men or timid women. Will Go in Trunk. "There is no rensou why landing places could not be provided on the flat roofs of your New York skyscrnp-crs, skyscrnp-crs, for tho Arclierplane will land within sixty feet against a moderate wind. "And the construction nnd weight of the machine is such that a man will he able to put all the parts in a good-sized good-sized trunk when he wishes to cross the ocean and quickly reassemble them when he arrives on the other side. "If I can cet ffoinjj quickly enough I shall expect to turn out at least fifty of the machines early in the new vear, and by the end of 1920 I confidently con-fidently expect the orthodox ChriRtmas present of any boy over fourteen will be an air -jitney. ' ' In time of war, Archer said, the machine could be used for rapid scout work or for the carrying of important messages. |
