Show Shipyards Closed. All the way from Montreal, Canada, to Vancouver and - Victoria, B. C, false peace reports sent crowds of people cheering and shouting into the streets. Victoria and Vancouver business was nearly suspended, shipyards closed in many cases, flags were flung to the breeze, fireworks exploded and returned soldiers paraded. Premier John Oliver of British Columbia sent a message of congratulations to Premier Lloyd George. Towns all over western Washington bombarded the Associated Press office at Seattle with telegraphic and telephonic inquiries as to the truth of the report, and when the people everywhere found that the report was entirely without foundation deep disappointment was manifested. In Portland, Ore., thousands of shipyard ship-yard workers, accompanied by bands, bells and sirens, marched through the streets. Efforts by the police to prevent the parades from starting, on account of the influenza situation, were overridden. |
