Show Much Wine Consumed. At one place 200 gallon casks of wine were placed in the street and everyone was invited to drink to the "death" of the kaiser. A shop which closed for the afternoon displayed a mourning wreath with the sign: "The kaiser is dead." Ono parade was led by a figure In chains representing the kaiser. The Chicago opera company was rehearsing re-hearsing when a Belgian tenor rushed in crying: "Stop, stop, peace has been declared." Director Campaninl ordered the orchestra to play the "Star Spangled Banner" and the national anthems of the allies. The rehearsal was adjourned and the singers joined in the street celebrations. celebra-tions. At many points the police were forced to use their clubs to control the crowds and several persons were injured. Fearing Fear-ing that conditions might become worse after nightfall, police reserves were called into the downtown district. Despite the denials which quickly followed fol-lowed the reports of peace the demonstration demon-stration continued in all sections of the city for several hours, although rain, which began late in the afternoon, dispersed dis-persed tho crowds downtown, causing a serious traffic congestion on elevated and surface lines. |
