W r YANKEES II FREE EAGER FOR 111 Every man In-the United States army in France is endeavoring to show the boche that a force from a democratic nation, with one year's training, is superior su-perior to the best soldiers of Germany. This determination is told in a letter from John L. Holladay, D battery, 34Sth field artillery, with the American expeditionary expe-ditionary forces. Mr. Holladay is a son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Holladay of Sandy. The letter to his brother, Earl Holladay of Fayson, follows: "France, September 18. "I have just returned from school, where I have been studying airplane signaling. sig-naling. I expect in a few days to learn more about telegraphy. It comes quite easy for me, as I passed it all In the states, but we have ' to be perfect in everything when we get to the front. "Every man is determined to show the Germans that the United States can train an army in one year that can outclass the Prussian guard, the flower of a military mili-tary nation. The Americans on the front have established a telephone system that is par excellence, and the Huns are beginning be-ginning to learn something of the true meaning of American efficiency. "We certainly have a 'hard boiled' outfit out-fit In the 34Sth. The westerners mean business. "we are having fairly good weather here, though it rained today for a chanse. A rainstorm occasionally is badly needed to wash and clean some of the villages. The people of some of the small towns here "ve in one room and lodge their pigs, rabbits, sheep and chickens In the other. The result of this domestic arrangement ar-rangement can be imagined. "I am glad your grain is good, for wheat helps win the war. We are given good American white flour bread here. "It will not be so very long before I will be on the ranch with you, and I certainly cer-tainly will be glad to get my feet on good United States soil. again." |
