Show WEST H DEFEATS , EAST BYDNE POINT Game Between Old Rivals Closely Contested From Beginning to End. t i It would be a poor basketball fan or ! fannette who did not enjoy the contest between the East and West high school teams yesterday afternoon. The game i xvas close from start to finish, with the "West high Panthers noslag- out their Leopard opponents at the very last minute min-ute of play. The final score was 1 to 15. The West high gymnasium was crowded to its utmost capacity with students from both the East and West schools, besides a number of visitors from other schools. And they certainly saw a battle worth I coing miles to see. for neither team gave up in its efforts to win out even for the fraction of a second. Promptly at 4:30 o'clock Referee Austin t Miller sent the two quintettes against I each other. Art Leonard grabbed the ball immediately after it was batted to him I by Ernest Fallentine in the jump-up and sent it spinning through the hoop for the Panthers' first score. Not to be outdone, however, Anderson for the Ueopards captured cap-tured the sphere as soon as it was cen- j tared up for the second time, anfl, following follow-ing Leonard's example, shot the ball through the basket (or the two points needed to tie the score. From that time until the finish of the pame all field goals for either side were made only by hard and diligent work. I With but a few seconds more to be j played before the end of the first half, i the Leopards had run the score up to j S to 5 in their favor. The Panrhera rallied. The result was a field goal by ! Phil Barlow, followed in quirk suros-! suros-! gion by a euccessful foul try by Captain J Fallentine. which once more put the teams upon even terms. The first period of the 'game ended S to S. Martin Ottinger opened the scoring in the second half when he shot in two successful suc-cessful foul tries. Fallentine dfd likewise like-wise for the Panthers, and once more made the score even all around. During 4iie rest of this period both teams plaved .their level best, with foul pitches about the only means of scoring by either lde. During the entire second half but three fields goals were rogisterei. two of them being made by Glen Anderson for the Leopards. The other was a Panther score, made by Art Leonard. The final whistle came just as Ottinser v.-as about to try for a foul goal. He was permitted to continue, but his throw was not accurate, and the Leopards lost their eleventh-hour chance to tie the score. Considering the rivalrv between the two schools, the game was cleanly played bv both teams, although 2& fouls were called. Of these. :'l were made by the Leopards. The two teams will plav a return game on March I at the Fast high school." Lineup and summary: EAST HIGH (VA. Fd.G. Ft. T. FIG. T.P. Ottinser. If 0 s 5 5 J.
