Show EXPERT ADVICE 01 M IN AUTO Suggestions on Adjusting Brakes, Valves, Tires, Tubes, Carburetor. When the car owner has, installed on bis vehicle a "winter body of any type, he should remember that he has added considerable weight to the vehicle. For this reason it is necessary that he carefully care-fully adjust the brakes to ears for the added burden. .Neglect, of this obvious-precaution obvious-precaution causes many minor rear-end rear-end collisions in city driving and maj-contributo maj-contributo to serious accident. Leakage around the stems of the intake in-take valves usually manifests itself in a falling off in power, difficult starting start-ing and misfiring at small throttle openings. A makeshift remedy lies in fitting the valve stem guides with some form of lubricant retaining means. This may be either a series of narrow grooves cut in the valve stem and into which graphite and oil paste has been rubbed so as to fill them, or stuffing boxes may bo fitted at the outer ends of the guides. The latter is the more permanent and satisfactory job, in that should the guide wear considerably t ho nut may be drawn down upon the packing', thereby preventing leakage. When inserting a now inner tube or replacing the obi one whieli has been repaired, the inside of the casing should first be wiped out with a damp cloth to remove any sand or grit that mav be present. A single sharp pointed grain of sand between the easing and the tube is likely to force its wav through the tube, causing a puncture. This is the real cause of many a mysterious mys-terious puncture. A great many car owners make the mistake of adjusting the carburetor when the engine is cold. It is always best to make adjustments to t lie motor after it has been run long enough to get thoroughly warmed through; and this applies equally to the valvo tappets, tap-pets, etc. It is quite possible that tho cold motor may operate well on certain adjustments that will not agree at all with the hot engine. During the colder half of the year geareases packed with grease will cause the gears to run practically without with-out lubrication, because the grease sticks to the walls of the housing and little if any gets to the gear teeth. Oil, and not greate. is the proper lubricant lu-bricant for the gearcase, at any rate during cold weather. |
