Show HIGHER PRICES ASKED FOR TOPPING BEETS In Some Districts $1 a Ton Has Been Demanded; Growers Refuse to Accede. , Special to the Tribune. OGDEX. Oct. 8. Despite an increase from 23 to 1J5 cenls a ion over last year's prices, men employed for topping beets in this county are demanding as high as ?! a ton in some of the districts, according accord-ing to reports received at the headquarters headquar-ters of Hie Weber County Farm bureai. The growers are refusing to pay this price and have announced that they will resort to " t he expedient of putting all members of their families to work in tiie beet fields rattier than pay Ibis amount. Due to the shortage of iabor this year the growers ip t Ids count y have agreed to increase tiie wages to G's and 7.i cents a ton for topping, but they draw the line at Si a ton. Even at G5 and 75 cents a ton expert beet toppers will be able to make as high as $10 and $12 a day working work-ing on average sized beets, according to W. P. Thomas, county agricultural agent. Many .Japanese a re employed in the beet fields of this county during the topping top-ping season and they are said to be among those demanding 51 a ton. |
