Show BLISS 10 PERSHING ARE FILGEI1S President Signs Commissions; Commis-sions; Next Grade Not to Be Conferred Now. WASHINGTON, Oct. 8. President Wilson' today signed commissions as generals gen-erals for Major General Tasker H. Bliss, army chief of staff, and Major General j John J. Pershing, commanding the Amer- ican forces in France. Though both offl- ' cers have equal rank, General Biss takes I precedence by virtue of his position as the directing head of the entire army organization. or-ganization. Congress revived tho rank of general fo.- the period of the war largely large-ly in order to avoid embarrassment to General Pershing in dealing with officers of higher rank commanding , the allied armies on the western front. The new grade carries a salary of ?10,000 a year, an increase of $20u0 over the pay of major ma-jor general. The grade of lieutenant general also was revived by congress, the rank to be given commanders of army corps, but it was stated authoritatively at the war department today that there is no intention inten-tion of creating any lieutenant generals or army corps In the United States at this time, as the divisional training system will be continued. The name of Major General Sibert was mentioned today as the most likely candidate candi-date for the first commission as lieutenant lieu-tenant general when an army corps is organized in France, as he commanded the first troops sent to Europe. The president also signed commissions of army bureau chiefs to be major generals gen-erals and commissions for manv new brigadier generals whose nominations were confirmed by the senate in the closing clos-ing hours of the last session of congress. |
