Show SCANDAL MONGERS SCORED Bl PRIEST Wickedness of Idle Gossip Is Pointed Out in Mission Mis-sion Address. Gossips and scandal mongers were severely se-verely criticised last night at the mission mis-sion being given in the Catholic cathedral ca-thedral of the Madeleine in a sermon delivered de-livered by the Arery Rev. Frederick Maune, C. M. He devoted his sermon to a discussion of "Some Sins of the Tongue.!' Father Maune declared that the sin of detraction was a very serious se-rious offense, since it affected one of the most valuable possessions of a human hu-man being, his reputation. "Remember, if a person is guilty of a certain sin or fault," said Father Maune, "how vou would feel if you were guilty ot the same tning ,ioui-self ,ioui-self You" would not want people to talk about it. Hence, practice the golden rule of charity, and do not I spread words of detraction. Never say a thing which, if true of you, you would not want others to say about you.' Father Maune begau by pointing to the tremendous power for good the tontme could be. He noted what a i calamity it would be if the secrets ot mind and heart were given to mankind. man-kind. , " Vhd the tonguo is the only member mem-ber of your bodv over which you have complete control," said the missionary. "You may force me to see things which I do not wish to see; you may forco me to hear things which I do not wh to hear- vou mav force me to move my foot when T do not waut to move it. But vou cannot force my tongue to speak one word which T do not want it to speak. Therefore, you can see readilv what a sin yon are committing when 'vou use vour tongue other than to glorify God and edify men. "You may sav you do not mean anything any-thing bv telling obscene stories and the like Well, let me tell you that the devil ioins in the laugh yon create by such talk Beware of the. scandal you may spread, of the evil thoughts you mav arouse in the minds of others by such talk. Woe unto those who put bad thoughts into the minds of little ones. "1 wonder if vou live up to your Christian belief when you hear impure t-ilk? What is vour attitude when you hear filthv and' unclean conversations . I am afraid many of you stand hack afraid, with a weak smile on your faces. You should do one of two things: you could make a straightforward state ment tnat vou am nui iciu -.. versation and would leave if it was continued: or vou could show by a frozen, disgusted countenance that you did not approve, and the conversation, very likely, would not continue. ." Concerning this sin of detraction: Tt is not thoroughly understood alwavs. Suppose I am going home late at night, and T meet a young man of our acquaintance ac-quaintance who' is intoxicated. T have no ricrht to go around next day and tell evervone about it. I would do an net of charitv if T went to the hoy's father and told him. But. I would not he justified in telling others, because therebv I would be forfeiting for him the esteem of others. Ts there one of vou here who does not value his reputation repu-tation more than anything else? When von make known the faults of others, but of a spirit of gossip or for revenge, vou are stealing away that reputation, and are doing a serious wrong." |
