While six Beaver tubs were pouring: across the old home plate today ofl Chief Johnson John-son and Lefty Deeanniere, chubby Al Sothoron was holding the Vernon Tigers to two isolated doubles, one of which waa converted into a run through Bill Rodgers's boot, and saved tho visitors a shut-out. Eleven of the Tigers fanned. Sothoron held the Hampats hitless until the fifth, when Griggs cracked a double against right center field fence and reached third when Rodgers booted Hilly ard 's grounder. Pete Balcv, who pinched for Maltick, forced J-fillyard at second and Griggs crossed the plate, with the lone ace. ! Two innings later Bates lifted a slam to the runway on the right garden wall, and it was good for a double because it failed to roll back to the field. .The Beavers made the portly chief look like a cigar store ornament in the third, when they took the lead by scoring two runs. Ono run was scored in the sixth, which resulted in Johnson being der-ricked. der-ricked. Portland scored again in the seventh, and p.ut over two more in the eighth.
