Show JSPKE OFFICIAL SPOKERfflHIMSELF Embassy Disclaims Responsibility Respon-sibility for Statements Recently Made. i i WASHINGTON, Sept. 2S. Responsibility Responsibil-ity Cor any statement that after the European Eu-ropean war Japan would renew negotiations negotia-tions with the United States over emigration emi-gration and alien land legislation was disclaimed by the Japanese embassy today to-day in a statement issued by the charge, Tokichl Tanaka. It was explained that an official of the embassy who expressed views on this subject yesterday spoke personally and without any authoriza- j tion. , I Furthermore. Mr. Tanaka declared that Baron Sakatani, the former Japanese finance minister, who has suRxested in I speeches at New York that Japan would lake up the alien land issue again as soon as the war was over, was in no wav authorized to speak for the foreign office and was discussing the question . solelv ae an influential statesman, rep- resenting a large body of Japanese, public pub-lic opinion. 1 The embassy statement follows: A press report concerning Japanese-American Japanese-American relations, that appeared in several papers this morning, containing contain-ing views said to have emanated from this embassy, contained several misrepresentations. Among other j things, the most glaring are statements state-ments concerning the immigration and the California land law matter. ! As to the question of the Japanese I immigration into this country Japan j has lor the present nothing whatever 1 to negotiate about. What is generally gener-ally known as the gentleman's agreement is being observed to the satisfaction of our two countries. Whatever objectionable section existed exist-ed In the proposed Immigration bill of the United States has been deleted. The California land law controversy may be said to be in abeyance, since, I as "is apparent by the published correspondence cor-respondence between tne Japanese ! and the American governments, both governments have not yet arrived at ; a final disposition of the question. j However, whether or not Japan will renew her protests in this matter at the end of the European war. or whether ehe will revive the controversy contro-versy in one form or another at all, this embassy has not the least knowledge. |
