Southington Romtdy Co Kanui City, Mo, II ST BERKELEY Id T0SERVE UTAH The announcement was made by the treasury officials in Washington yesterday yester-day that Berkeley. Cal., had been seleoted as" the location iof a federal loan bank. States to be served by this district bank, which will be known as district No, 11, will include California, Nevada, Utah and Arizona. The banks are to be organized at Once by the appointment of fivo directors for each and these shall be residents of the district in which the bank is located. Tha directors shall select from their number tho officers of the bank. The capital stock for each bank will be $70.000 and will be open to public subscription for thiriv da vs. If it is not entirely subscribed sub-scribed at the end of that time, the government gov-ernment is authorized under the law to take the unsubscribed amount. The location of the bank at Berkeley, while a disappointment to the people of Salt Lake City and Utah generally, will not niaku any material difference in the system of rural loans as affecting this state, according to J. David Larson, secret sec-ret a i'y of i he Commercial club. "We must take the optimistic view of the siiua tton." said Mr. Larson, "and feel that a big step in progress has been taken by the mere establishment of the hank which provides for the government mn king loans on fa rm lands. "While the establishment of a bank in rfa It Lake would have been a splendid thing in the way of advertising, tho administration ad-ministration of the system of loans can be handled just as wed in some other city, and loans will be just as available. "It must be remembered that in all likelihood the farm loan bank will appoint ap-point an investigator for tills district from Salt Lake. The only difference that, will result wih be the time, consumed in the transportation of mail matter between be-tween sail Lake and Berkeley." "In determining the federal land bank districts and in designating the cities within such disirh-ts where federal land I ba nkH sha 11 be loca t ed," the official an-: an-: nnuncetnent s ;i ys, "the f edera 1 farm loan ; board has given careful consideration to 'the farm Irian needs of the country. Tho board held public hearings in nearly every . sta t e In the union." The issuance, of farm loan bonds, a new form of spc-irity in this country, will firt occupy the attention of the bank officials. The new bonds will be Issued in denominations denomi-nations as small as and will bear Interest In-terest at the yate of 1 per cent less than tiie interer-'t rate now charged fanners on their loans. This Interest rate ia limited lim-ited by law to a maximum of 6 per cent. |
