Show BRITISH FORCES BOMB DUGOUTS OF THE GERMANS LONDON, Dec. 1:05 a. m. The report re-port from British headquarters in France, issued at midnight, reads: On Tuesday night a party of our troops searched for some few hundred hun-dred yards t he enemy's frunl-line trenches northwest of bens, bombing bomb-ing his dugouts and doing considerable consider-able damage to his defenses. After completing their work our men returned re-turned without casualties. Our positions on the right of our line north of the Somme and near Le Sars were heavily shelled hy the enemy at -intervals Tuesday "night and Wednesday. Bombardments of the enemy defenses and trench mortar mor-tar emplacements vere carried out by us with good results south of Arras, in the neighborhood of Hulluch and west of Messines. -Elsewhere there was the usual artillery activity. On Tuesday much successful' work was done by our airmen in co-opera-lion with our artillery. In tbe course of a number of lights in the air a hostile machine was destroyed and live others were fdVced to land in a damaged condition. Three of our machines are missing. Artillery Activity. PARIS. Dec. .27, 10:45 p. m. The official statement on the campaign issued by the war office tonight reads: Marked artillery activity was displayed dis-played in several sectors south of the Somme. One of our bombardments caused two fires and an explosion in an enemy battery. In the region of Beauvraines, south of the Avre, we exploded successfully successful-ly several mines. At the conclusion of this operation our men raided the trenches, bringing back prisoners. The day was calm on the rest of the front. Belgian commmunieation : At various points on the Belgian front there was moderate artillery activity, ac-tivity, particularly in the section of Steenstraete and Dixmude. Entente Loses Nine Aeroplanes. BEREIN. Dec. L'7. by wireless to Say-ville. Say-ville. Nine airplanes were lost by the entente in aerial engagements along the western front yesterday, the war office announced today. There has been violent artilicry activity in the Ypres salient and in the region north of tiie river Somme. Of the campaign in Macedonia the statement state-ment says: Mncedonian front: There has been no important fighting activity. Rome Report. ROME, Dec. 27. via London, 4:25 p. m. "Tn the Adige valley," says today's war office statement, "our , artillery kept the enemy's lines under a vigorous fire and disturbed his working oarties. "(in the rest of the front the completion of our field works was interrupted at several sev-eral points by skirmishes with the enemy's en-emy's advanced posts." Two Vessels Torpedoed. The foreign for-eign office has received advicr-s that the Greek government is carrying out its promise to demobilize tbe Greek army. The work is proceeding satisfactorily, the advices indicate. An Overseas News agency statement state-ment today says: The French headquarters statement state-ment of December 23 reported German Ger-man machines shot down. The "British government has contracted for the entire exportable supply of New Zealand meat until at least three months after the close of the European war, according to reports reaching the commerce department, depart-ment, from its agents abroad. England and France have fully agreed upon the terms of the replv to be made to the peace proposals pro-posals of the Teutonic allies, the Associated Asso-ciated Press learned at the foreign office of-fice today. It is hoped here that the answer may be dispatched hi- the end of this week, hut other nations of the entente, although agreed in principle, may require, verbal alterations which would necessitate further delay. It is expected that once this reply has been forwarded the response to President Wilson's note will follow very shortly. Russia's Reply.
