Following a conference in Berlin !; VV yesterday between the kaiser and Ambassador Gerard, j the American ambassador has advised President Wilson today j j: that Germany is ready to grant greatly modified peace terms. ; This was the information obtained from official circles here j I; tonight. It is known that several cablegrams were received at j : the White house today from Ambassador Gerard, but neither : j: the Whits house nor Secretary of State Lansing would discuss ; !; them. The proposal to establish Poland and Lithuania as indepen- j j; dent kingdoms and the proposal to pay a Belgium indemnity, : !; offset by allied indemnities, have been abandoned in the modi- fied terms, it was learned. j: Following are some other terms in the modified proposal: : j: The evacuation and restoration of Belgium, Ger- j j: many paying an indemnity for damages to persons and : J property on the ground that the invasion of Belgium ; was a military necessity. ; The evacuation of French territory.
