Show PORTER AND ASHTON MEET IN A DEBATE Fitness of Bamberger and Morris for Governorship Is Discussed t Bountiful. Special to The Tribune. BOUNTIFUL, Nov. S. The first of a series of dobates between N. T. Portor and E. Conway Aabton on the respective respect-ive fitness of &imon Bamberger and Ne-pbi Ne-pbi L. Jlorris for the governorship was held .here tonight before the largest political gathering in the historv of the town. The opera house was filled to its capacity by admirers of both candidates candi-dates from all parts of Davis county. yir. Ashton opened the debato. He scarcely referred to the merits of Mr. Morris, but directed an attack against Mr. Bamberger. He talked fifty minutes min-utes and then Mr. Portor spoke for an hour defending Mr. Bamberger. He set forth that Mr. Bamberger as a builder had been instrumental in the development develop-ment of tho county. Mr. Ashton talked ten minntes in rebuttal re-buttal and criticised Mr. Bamberger for what he termed a free distribution of passes over his railroad. At this point someone in the audienco asked Mr. Ashton Ash-ton if he was not riding on a Bamberger Bamber-ger pass at the time he mentioned. Upon admitting that he had been, Mr. Ashton was greeted by a roar of laughter. laugh-ter. Judging by the applause, the audience seemed t0 be about evenly divided on the result of tho debate. |
