Boston went into first place in the American league standing today, defeating Detroit while New York was losing two games to St. Louis. Chicago, easily disposing of the Athletics in a double-header, advanced to second position, five points ahead of New York. The pennant race in the American league is proving one of the moat exciting ex-citing in recent years. While the last week Drought iittle change in the standing stand-ing of the contending teams until Sunday, Sun-day, it saw a marked tightening of the race. New York retained the lead Saturday, Sat-urday, with Boston less than ten points behind and Chicago only a few points behind Boston. Cleveland, until recently the league leader, was ri lit behind Chicago. Chi-cago. In fact, fewer than 100 points separated New York from St. Louis in seventh place. Brooklyn still leads in the National league. Boston. Philadelphia and Now York follow the Super! ias in the order named. Boston and New York played the best ball of the eastern clubs during the week and they gained on Brooklyn and Philadelphia, respectively. The Braves, although having a hard series with Chicago, lessened Brooklyn's lead. The Superbas' pitching has not been very brilliant for a league-leading team, but the deficiency has been more than made up by effective hitting at the right moment.
