Show FRENCH SEIZE NEW GROUND ON SOMME; REPEL ATTACKS PARIS, July 30, 11:45 p. m. After a pause, the French echelon north of t he Somme resumed operations today, giving further proof of the perfection of the new method by making a clean sweep of the German positions along a three and a half mile front from J lardocourt to the river. The French troops in Pi card y have been awaiting until the British carried out the operation assigned to them. That having been satisfactorily completed, the central echelon received word to mova forward against the German trenches on the eastern slopes of the ravine through whl'h a light railroad runs from Combles to Clery and Peronne. TCvery detail of the advance had been worker) out with mathemFjtic precision before be-fore hand, and the operation, was completed com-pleted well within the time limit set. The attacking troops met with a more-than -usual amount of resistance from the Ger ma ii8, who had foreseen the move and had marie every preparation In their power pow-er to frustrate it. The positions had been strengthened, as well as the Incessant rain of projectiles from the French artillery artil-lery permitted, and a large force of reserves re-serves were gathered In the rear. The German reserves were hurried forward for-ward as soon as tho French dash slackened, slack-ened, and the fighting was fast and furious furi-ous and especially at the southern end of the line, where the nature of the ground permitted the counter-attacking troops to advance with pome prospect nf getting through the French curtain of fire. The French sta ff work, however, was too well done and, although the Germans struggled bravely and stuhhornly all aft- I ernoon and well into the night, they failed to regain an inch of ground. Wave after wave of German infantrv was swept away by the well-direc ted French machine gun and light artilleiy fire. , The communication says: i Yesterday our machine engaged in eleven fields on the Roninio front. Three German ma' hines were brought down and u fourth machine, utladtcu i by one of our aeroplanes, was dashed to pieces within, the German lines In the Argonne. It is confirmed that one of the German machines previousl v reported as having been seriously damaged in the course of an aerial fight on the Somme front was in fact brought down bv Second Lieutenant Guy Nemer. This brought the number num-ber of German aeroplanes this officer has driven down to eleven. In the course of Saturday night forty bombs of 120 kilograms each were dropped on enemv railway stations sta-tions in the Noyon district. This morning one of our bombarding bombard-ing squadrons dropped several heavy bomhs on the railway station and military establishments at Muelheim on the right hank of the Rhine |
