Show personality through play is a process pro-cess more educative than the implied im-plied elf-centered fun. Other important reasons for playgrounds are: (1) Playgrounds are safe grounds, the1 tragic loss of life by automobiles has enhanced en-hanced the value of playgrounds as a haven of child safety; (2) Play activities influence children's moral mor-al habits and attitudes; (3) Well conducted playgrounds do much to prevent delinquency; (4) The intellectual discipline of games, crafts and musical and dramatic activities often have lasting ef- fects on the child's mental outlook; out-look; (5) The purpose of the playground play-ground in Bingham has not been merely to teach the children the right use of leisure time to fill up idle hours, but also to create an active, energetic, happy preparation pre-paration for future citizenship. Opportunities offered at the Bingham playground this year have included ten weeks of supervised su-pervised recreation covering the fields of arts and crafts, dancing, music, and dramatics as well as sports of all types. Once each week a well planned program of sports and relays were held in Copperton; every child on these occasions brought his lunch and was transported by school bus to and from Copperton. Each Friday an opportunity was given every child to participate in either an amateur show, pet show, doll show, or original sketch. Also every Friday each child had the privilege of signing up to play in some tournament or contest con-test to bo held during the coming week with the finals being always al-ways played on Friday before the whole playground. The playground was always willing and glad of the opportunity oppor-tunity to help sponsor some community com-munity project. During the year the children helped organize and plan a flag day parade, a float for the Fourth of July, a unit to represent Bingham at the Mid-vale Mid-vale Harvest celebration, and the crowning achievement of the year, a final program which was witnessed by 250 of their friends and parents. The playground is supported by Bingham district through the Bingham Community Chest and is sponsored by the Women's Civic club. Contributed WHY PLAYGROUNDS? If we want the children of our community to be happy and who of us does not want that? we must provide them with places to play. It is common observation that children find joy in play, that joy spells harmonious development de-velopment and freedom from tension. It signifies that a basic hunger for new experiences, friendships and achievements are being satisfied. Youngsters themselves them-selves call the play experience fun, but the unfelt flowering of |
