Governor William Spry arrived home last night from Washington, where he wnt several weeks ago to appear before be-fore congressional committees and interior in-terior department officials on behalf of the state's interests in the public lands. Ho appeared before the committee on public lands of the senate last Monday and voiced his disapproval and that of the state to the Ferris bill, designed to regulate power sites in Utah and elsewhere in the great west, where most of the public lands are located. "The bill has many objectionable features,'' said the governor.'" It would stifle the development of power sites and would prevent investments in this state and elsewhere in the west. I told the 6enate committee this and I also endeavored again to persuade the secretary sec-retary of the interior that tho public lands of tho west must be opened more freely to development if tho western states are not to be hindered in their progress. "It is an old story. We have been harping on tho question for years, and we aim to keep at it until officialdom and the people of the nation as a whole come to see tho justice of our viewpoint." view-point." The governor also entered protests against several land leasing bills now pending. In every case he sought to have widened aud extended tho rights of the states to administer tho public lands within their borders. "Business is not good in tho east, and it would be unwarranted optimism to say that it is,'' tho governor said. "The immediate outlook is rather poor, but the ultimate outcome is sure to be full of promise. I, am glad to get. back to Salt Lake. ' ' |
