Allan Gardner, a bank messenger, and George De Brosa, a bandit, died late tonight from bullet wounds received in a sensational attempt at-tempt made by the latter to steal a bag containing $4000 in the Fourteenth street subway station during the rush hour late today. Gardner was shot by De Brosa, who was in turn wounded by bullets from his own revolver, which had been wrested from him by Walter F. Orleman, another messenger. De Brosa died first; Gardner ten minutes later. The messengers were employees of the Bank of the Metropolis in Union Un-ion Square, near the scene of the holdup. hold-up. De Brosa, who was armed with three revolvers, carried nearly 20 cartridges, a bag of black powder and wore two suit's of clothes, walked up behind the messengers messen-gers and fired two shots into the head of Gardner, who carried the bag, and as the messenger fell to the floor, amid the cries of the subway throng, the bandit threw away the revolver, seized the bag and fled. Orleman gave chase and De Brosa drew a second pistol and rired. the bullet lodging in the messenger's coat. Orleman, however, wrested the weapon from De Brosa and lired twice, one bullet lodging in De Brosa's back. He dropped his booty and fled Into Broadway. By this time police were approaching from several directions, De Brosa drew his third revolver, and, discarding his outer suit, ran across Union Square. Here he attempted to retrace his steps, but was felled by a patrolman whom he attempted attempt-ed to shoot. |
