The following statement regarding the situation in Serbia was given out today by the Overseas News agency: ! Dispatches from the Serbian front give impressive descriptions of the breakdown of the Serbian military organization. During the recent Austro - Hungarian - (j-erman - Bul-gariaji Bul-gariaji advance, more than 51,000 Serbians were taken prisoner. There were 40,000 Serbians already in Austro-Hungarian hands. The Serbian army on a war footing numbered only 300,000. The army further lost 478 cannon, can-non, while it possessed only 14 cannon. Thus virtually all the artillery ar-tillery has been lost. Among the captured cannon are heavy French fortress and Englinh naval gnna, French field howitzers and some Krupp cannon which bad . been taken from the Turks in the Balkan war. The number of British Brit-ish and new French cannon captured cap-tured is 200. The victors, further, captured enormous numbers of rifles, machine guns, mine-throwers and searchlights, search-lights, as well as ammunition, victuals, vic-tuals, winter clothing and several thousand railroad cars and locomotives. locomo-tives. Iting Peter, fleeing in a broken itrwyn and dilapidated automobile, j which stuck in the mud in an impassable im-passable road, continued his flight in a country wagon, followed by the crown prince and the members of the general stuff. The txirbian army is getting more and more demoralized. Some regiments regi-ments mutinied and shot their own officers; others have disbanded, taken to the mountains and opened guerilla warfare. Wounded prisoners prison-ers for the most part were left to their fate and tended only by a few Danish and Serbian nurses and . Serbian surgeons. The desperate condition of Serbia is indicated by the Corriere llla Sera ( Koine), which describes the formation of "the battalion of death," comprising women only, in which already 300 women are enrolled: |
