That the man who was arrested Saturday Sat-urday Bitspected of being Hugh Whitney, Whit-ney, the bandit, and who gave the name of Joseph Gabriel, is not Whitney, but a Mexican, Is the opinion of the police after several persons who knew the bandit ban-dit failed yesterday to Identify him. At least six Sail Lakers visited Gabriel's cell and declared that lie is not the much-wanted much-wanted outlaw. Tho police also discovered discov-ered several discrepancies in the similarity simi-larity of appearance of tho two men. Whitney Is said to be about 5 feet, S inches tall, while the man In custody Is little more than 5 feel, 6 Inches. Then, too, his eyes are brown while Whitney's are blue. Among those who visited the cell was John A. .Tenson of 505 South Fourth East street. Jenson Is a sheepshcarer and formerly worked each year Jn Cokevllle, Wyo. He last saw Whitney about four years ago. and declared he would know him anywhere, "That man 1e sure Hugh Whitney," he said before he had seen the suspect. sus-pect. "How do you know?", he was asked. "Well. I saw that picture this morning morn-ing in The Tribune." It was explained that the photograph in the paper was really a likeness of the notorious outlaw, but not of the suspect, sus-pect, and he was given a view of Gabriel. Ga-briel. "No," he said, after he came out. "That is not Whitney. I would know him among a thousand." Gabriel is being held on an open charge. As he was arrested at 6" 10 o'clock Saturday Sat-urday night the legal time for holding a suspect will not explrt until tonight. In the event that Gabriel has nothing connected with him besldos his general resemblance to Whitney, it Is probable that he will be released before the legal forty-eight hours elapse. |
