Show SMOOT SEES DEATH OF SUGAR INDUSTRY Utah Senator Predicts Defeat of Democrats Through Tariff Bill. CURRENCY BILL TO PASS Fears Politics Instead of Business, Busi-ness, Is Basis for the Measure. Special to The Tribune. J'ROVO. Sept. 14. The immediate passage pas-sage of the currency bill In practically the form proposed by President Wilson, Wil-son, the defeat of the Democratic party as a result of the passage of the t'nrlfC bill, the death of thc sugar Industry, Jtnd the reunion of the Progressive and Republican parties, are some of the forecasts of United States Senator Kccd Smoot, who is at home from Washington for a fortnight's respite from the legislative legis-lative duties. Senator Smoot said: The currency bill seems absolutely absolute-ly sure of pnss:igo both In the house and senate. President Wilson is In absolute control of both branches of the national legislature. Whatever he says the Democrats have to do. Everybody recognizes the need for a reform In the currency system of the country and everybody hopes tho change will bc for business und not political advantage. T. still have hopes that tho bill aH reported In tho house will be modified. The bill ns pioposod placoB the control of tho country's currency In a partisan board. This should not be done. Will Be Approved. The tariff bill will undoubtedly be approved In prnctlcally the form In which It left the senate, r anticipate antici-pate no Immediate dlaairous effects as a result of the Democratic tariff bill. Times are good and the factories facto-ries In Europe and America are working to their full capacities. With dull times, however, which are surfi to come sooner or later the effects of the removal of protection will be felt. Factories ln Europe will continue con-tinue to operate, but the home factories fac-tories will have to close. Products of foreign factories are admitted to this country practically duty free to compote with American products. Thc west will feel the force of the tariff bill through thc removal of duty on lead, wool and sugar. The sugar Industry will bc the greatest sufferer. Cuban sugar can be produced pro-duced and refined for 2 cents a, pound, while wesCern 3Ugar beet growers receive 2.12 cents per pound for tho saccharine ln the beets. The free sugar provision of the bill "Will become effective ln 1916 and tho Immediate Im-mediate effect will be a. reduction ln the price of sugar. The Democrats will attempt to play politics, declaring declar-ing that they have reduced the price of sugar and asking that they be kept in power ln order that they may reduce the price of other food products. This political trick will not work, however, for just as soon as the American sugar industry Is destroyed the refiners will advance the price again on the claim of a foreign crop shortage. Result Unexpected. Tho result of the Maine election forecasts the return of the people of the country to the party of protection. pro-tection. Federal officers did everything every-thing in their power to elect the Democratic congressional candidate. President Wilson sent Secretary Bryan and Speaker Clark Into thc district. Everybody ln Washington expected tho district to go Democratic, Demo-cratic, and ao did thc people in thc district. Hundreds of them who had read my tariff speech, which waa distributed In tho district, wroto me. predicting Democratic success. The Republican victory was a strong condemnation of the Democratic tariff policy. Tho result, too, -indicated a reunion of thc Progressive and Republican parties. The differ ence has been one of leaden; and nol of principle, and reports from Pennsylvania, Penn-sylvania, TklaCTachuHwtts and other eastern states lndlcato that the Progressives Pro-gressives will all bo back ln the Republican Re-publican party before 1916. Senator Smoot said that he was objecting ob-jecting to the confirmation of Wlialcy of Montana for internal revenue collector of thin district, because of Whaley'a connection con-nection with a creamery company which tho federal officers are Investigating. Should Whaloy dispose of his interests In the company, Senator Bmoot said he would no longer opposo his confirmation. |
