Show SEAL APflRTMEWTS OF LflOIl Vaticsui Authorities Fear the Theft of Documents Valuable Valu-able to the Church. ' ROME. Dee. 25. The apartments occupied oc-cupied by the late Cardinal Rampolla have been sealed up In consequence of a request made by Consignor dl Blsosno, administrator of St. Peter's. The step was urged by Cardinal Merry Del Val, papal secretary of state, simply to guarantee guar-antee the fjafety of documents of great interest to tne church, the possible loss of which was suggested by persistent reports re-ports regarding the disappearance of Cardinal Hampolla's last will and testament. tes-tament. That a will was executed by Cardinal Rampolla bearing a later date than the will found Is considered almost certain because the cardinal left a key with a tog attached, on which was Inscribed In his own handwriting the statement that tho key opened a box containing his will and those close to the cardinal think It. Incredible t.iat ho would not alter his testament of 1SS0, explaining that his estate hud grown four-fold since that date. The box referred to has not been found and so far no one hus come forward to say that he has absolute knowledge of the existence of the testament reported re-ported to bo missing. There Is no ovl- j donee that It was stolon, and no clulmb have been set up by anyone that he has sustained damage by the loss of the will. T.io authorities therefore are not in a position to take action, because, according to the Italian law in such case?, prosecution could be possible onlv after some interested pornons had prosecuted prose-cuted charges. As the situation Is now the authorities could not even start an Investigation. , |
