Show INVESTIGATION IS DEMANDED BY MOYER WASHINGTON, Dec. 25. Secretary of Labor Wilson roceived the following-telegram today from Charles H. Moyer. president of tho Western Federation of Miners, who Is directing tho copper strike at Calumet and vicinity, demanding federal fed-eral investigation of the Christmas ovc tragedy. Tho tclcsrams dated last night, was as follows: wives and little ones wnre arranging ar-ranging for a Christmas tree celebration cele-bration In a hall at Caluniot, Mich., tonight, the door wa-S opened by a person who gave a false alarm of fire. In their effort to get out of the hall, seventy-seven people lost their lives. Circumstances Cir-cumstances surroundinc: this terrible occurrence oc-currence demand immediate investigation by the government. I have wired Cio president. Will you see him and urge immcdlato action?" Secretary Wilson said he would communicate com-municate with the president ns soon as possible but ho did not know whether the government would have Jurisdiction Juris-diction In such a case. Pending a decision on the question of jurisdiction, Secretary Wilson said tonight to-night ho would not reply to the Moyer telegram. "Taci question of whether tho government govern-ment has the Jurisdiction to make tho Investigation In-vestigation requested by Mr. Moyer," said Secretary Wilson, "has not yet been passed on. Until It is disposed of I cannot can-not predict what, if any, action will be taken by the federal authorities." DENVER, Dec. 25. A contribution of SDO0O from the Western Federation of Miners will be forwarded to Calumet by telegraph tomorrow by Ernest Mills, secretary sec-retary of the federation, for the relief of relatives of victims of last night's panic which followed a false alarm of flro during a Christmas tree celebration. A message was sent bv Mr. Mills today to-day to the local copper miners' union at Calumet as follows: "Extend to our brothers and sisters of the federation and their friends, w.:o-have w.:o-have suffered tlio loss of their nearest and dearest through the terrible disaster of yesterday, my moat sincere and deepest deep-est heartfelt sympathy In tho hour of their distress and Buffering. It is an appalling calamity and every member of our organisation will feel the shock keenly keen-ly and extend their sympathy and aid. "Will comply with President Mover's request tomorrow by wiring 55000" for aid." Owner Shows Sympathy. BOSTON, Dec 25. When Informed of last nlg.ns tragedy at Calumet. Mich.. Qulncy A. Show, president of the Calumet Calu-met &. Hccla Mining company, sent the following telegram to James McNauch-ton. McNauch-ton. superintendent of the mines: "In some way through the local papers you will convoy our sympathy to the men and women to whom the loss Is a personal one. and to the whole community which has to faco such a dreadful calamity. "I feel sure that w.ion this message reaches you, you will havo done everything every-thing In tho company's power financially and with our hospital service, to render assistance to the victims and their families fam-ilies in this frightful accident," |
