Show LITTLE COMFORT FOR CONSUMERS By International News Service. CLEVELAND. March 2C There was no encouragement for the coal consumers consum-ers in the Joint convention of operators and miners which reBtimcd its session hero jdny. The operators renewed their ultimatum that the minerB accept the present wage scale and working conditions condi-tions for two years and that work be continued pending their final acceptance. The miners gave theoperators to understand under-stand that wage concessions must be made to insure peace. While both sides were firm, the miners min-ers appeared more conciliatory in their speeches. From the diacussion it was gathered that while they will not Insist I upon their original demands, they will maintain that "some" wage k increase must be granted or there will be no agreemont. Tho operators maintained they will not concede anything. The Joint conference will meet again tomorrow, tomor-row, but the situation Is summed up by leaders on both sides as follows: Iso agreement can be reached in the Joint conference. A suspension will follow. fol-low. At a later date the operators and miners will get together and then tho former will be more easily convinced that an increase Is deslra.ble. So certain, apparently, arc the operators opera-tors that no ugTcement will be reached at this conference that the presidents of the operators' associations of the four states mot tonight and drew up a concert con-cert statement of tho position of all operators Involved to bo given the minerB' min-erB' officials when all hope of a settlement settle-ment is gone. The Western Pennsylvania and Ohio operators arc pleading that there shall bo no suspension of work April 1, but at the same' time they are standing solidly i against an Increase. They admit that the only way to stop a suspension is by granting an increase. This has led tho miners to believe that they are not sincere sin-cere in protesting against a suspension, but really want it. |
