Show 10 SLAIN AND MANY INJURED IN CIYIC RIOT Battle Between Citizens of Rock Island, Illinois, and Police Who Attempt lo Preserve the Peace. STATE MILITIA IS FINALLY CALLED OUT Outbreak Is .the Result of the Recent Demand for Higher Wages and Suffragette Suffra-gette Agitation. By International News Service. ROCK ISLAND, III., March 26. Two persons were killed and thirteen Injured In a battle at Rock Island tonight between the . police force and the sheriff's deputies and 5000 enraged citizens. Two companies of state militia one from Galesburg and ono from Mollne havo been ordered to Rock Island. The riot was started .by citizens inflamed in-flamed by political speeches made at a mass meeting on the public square. The attacks were principally directed against Mayor Harry M. Schrlver and Commissioner Commis-sioner of Safety Archie Hart. Following tho conclusion of the speeches, the crowd surged up the streets, wrecking street cars and throwing throw-ing stones through windows of the stores. Policemen who attempted to quiet them were stoned and swept along In tho current towards the city hall, where Mayor Schrlver and Commissioner Hart had taken refuge. Officers Jeered. Arriving before the door of the city hall, tho crowd cried for Schrlver. Stones wero thrown through the windows and 11 was attempted to batter tho door down. The polico, armed with emergency emer-gency rloL guns, appeared at the windows win-dows and demand that the crowd disperse. dis-perse. Hoots and Jeers met their demand. de-mand. The police were ordered to fire in the air, but this failed to inject fear into the crowd. It served only to increase its fury and they beat about the very steps of the city hall In an effort to enter. Again the guns wero fired, this time low, and three men fell. The crowd refused re-fused to fall back and three guns were fired polntblank Into the throng. The bullets from the large barreled riot guns scattered and carried down ! four of Its members. One of these was Louis Orman, who was found to be dead. Later one of the" wounded died. He was Identified as a blacksmith from tho Rock Island shops. His name Is not known. Mob Disperses. With the wounding of tho leader. Dart of tho crowd lost its ardor. They fell back for the moment, but another man leaped forward. "Get guns and ammunition." he cried. "We'll starve th'em out." With this now life, nart of t'ne crowd fled down tho street, leaving the rest on guard. To the store of the Rock Island Hardware company they thronged. Here they broke the widows and entering took several dozen revolvers?, rifles and shotguns, shot-guns, as well as several cases of ammunition. am-munition. It is estimated that ?5000 worth of damage has been done to property. The street car lines are tied up and the more peaceable citizens arc not vonturlngout of doors. Late tonight the old city hall was a scene of ruin, with practically every window out and the doors splintered, held In - place only by the barricade of tables and chairs behind. The inmates had turned the lights out. so that stray shots would not find a mark, and were gathered In the basement- The crowd gave every promise of holding hold-ing forth until day. |
