Mys-tery. By Staff Correspondent BINGHAM, Doc. 6. That it xnAv take a week to thoroughly search the miles of underground passages in the Apex mine was the opinion of the searchers after they left tho property tonight. Nono of the thrco posses which soarchod all nay today found an trace of tho bandit. Nevertheless the hunters expressed the belief that Lo per. is somowhore in tho mine. The hunt will bo ronowed again early to morrow morning. By night all that part of the mine above the Audy tun ncl will have been thoroughly searched. The search of tho mino has now as-sumod as-sumod a systematic form. It will bo a process of elimination. As soon as a level is thoroughly searched guards mm will be so stationed that if Lopez is in that vicinity ho could not drop bock to a searched portion. After tho search abovo tho 300 level or Andy is com- plctcd tomorrow, tho searchers will drop down to tho Iowor ones. Tho Phoonix property is still nnscarchod, as aro tho York and the Cottonwood tunnels in tho upper part. Tho big mountain is a veritable Swiss cheese. It is full of every kind JW of a hole, stopo, tunnel, raise, in-cline in-cline and shaft imaginable. Place wore found where it 1b evident that the emudgo could never have reached, as the air was absolutely fresh acd uncon-taminated. uncon-taminated. For this reason it Ib be-lioved be-lioved that Lopez, if he is La the mino, may very possibly be alive. The search-ors search-ors crawl through tho mine with re-volvers re-volvers constantly ready for instant Leaders among yesterday's hunters expressed thoir belief last night that Lopez Is in the mine. Whon eome of them wero interviewed thoy gave tho following statomonts to The Tribune: Superintendent V. B. Rood I b- lievo Lop os 1b in tho mine. It will take ten men who know tho mine one veek to thoroughly Bearch the property. Dr. F. - Btraup I believe that H Lopez In In the mine. We have Ecarched go little of the real tend-tory tend-tory of the mine that thoro la' no co- H caelon to' be discouraged. Because so few of the many holes in the mine, loading from main tunnels, axe searched bo far there has been but a beginning. H Ouy Do Ford Sure. I think Lopez MmM la In there. We'll find him- yet. H S. 6. JoneH I haven't tho least B doubt but that Lopez Is In tho mine. H But hunting through tho entire property ! going to be a big Job. B Sheriff Honry East of Utah county if our guard? did their duty, and H I believe they did to a man, I don't H see how Lopez enn be anywhere else B in thoro. H Body Easily Hidden. Sheriff Aljeta of Tooele county I I hollcvo Lopez In In thero. I don t H believe we have ono guard that H would let him get by. Whether w find him or not. I would havo to H havo very good evidence to convince H me that he isn't In thero. It would B b an ensy matter for the body to H be hidden by a small cave-In of earth H thnt would not attract the attention H (Continued on Pago Four.) GUARDS Fli I i THE OF LOPEZ t (Continued from Pago Quo.) of tho searchers. Hunting for a needle In a huyatack Is pastime compared, com-pared, with miming a man in this mine. Tho lost thing that tho searchers did before going down tho hill tonight was to Inspect tho Parnell tunnel, where the cavo-In was found yesterday and where It was believed that Lopez might bo found. Tho searchers walked back through the tunnel as far as the cavo-In, cavo-In, about COO feet. Thore whh no trace of Lopez nor of blankets or food. It was into this tunnel that Mike Stefano said ho had carried tho blankets and other supplies. It la probable that Stefano will bo asked to go up into the Purncll with tho eciirchors tomorrow to bIiow them the exact Bpot whero ho left the supplies. Tho passagos leading off from thn Parnell Par-nell will bo moro thoroughly Inspected tomorrow. Only tho main tunnel was examined lust nlghv, as tho men were tired from a stronuous day. Thero arc a number of stopoa leading off from tho tunnel where it In' considered posslblo that the Mexican's body may yet be found. Tho cavc-ln will probably be examined ex-amined moro closely to oeo whether It is possible that Lopez might have been accidentally ac-cidentally or lntontlonally burled under un-der 1L Fumes in Parnell. Tho fumes wero found to ba very bad In tho Parnell. dcsplto the length of tlmo that tho bulkhead haa been open. This provos conclusively that tho cave-In occurred oc-curred after the smudging started, as It completely blocks the possago and no fumes could havo possibly passed it. However, those who inspected It this evening bcllevethat It waH a natural cave-In. Tho roof timbers in tho Parnell Par-nell Hre in a dangerous condition and cax'o-lns aro likely to occur anywhere In It at almost any tlmo. for this reason great caro will be taken during the ex amlnatlon tomorrow. The search of tho Andy tunnel and the nassatreB Iendlncr off from It was com pleted today. Fumes wero found to be bad In some places, so an air compressor was put to work to clear them out-Miners out-Miners have now returned to work on thin, tho 300 level. It Is the first level to be opened since tho shootliUj of Huleey and Manderlch. The searching was divided up among threo possea. Tho mombers of poaso ?o, 1 were 6. S. Jones, guldo; Deputy Sheriff Sher-iff C. L. Schottler, Dr. F. E. Straup, A. L. Kelly, Sheriff Henry East of Utah county, Sheriff Philip AlJeLs of Tooele county, Guv De Ford and F. V. Flta-Gerald Flta-Gerald of Tho Trlbuno staff. In posse N"o. 2 wore Victor Lassen, A. Q Robinson, Robin-son, J. D Cortcllo, Deputy Sheriff Julius Sorenson and George Itucker. Posse No. 3 consisted of Superintendent V. S. Rood of tho Apoxt Foreman Thomus Hosklng and T. Williams, tho mine blacksmith. Old Fire Found. The first posse wont in through the Andy tunnol, up through the Incline and out by way of the Pedro tunnol, searching search-ing thoroughly all along the route. Thero was no trace of Lopes. In going along through the Minnie tunnel to the Pedro tho posse found a place about 2000 feet back from tho entrance where Lopez had built a flro. All investigations yosterday wero confined con-fined to workings above tho Andy tunnol tun-nol or on that level. The system will bo a gradual process of elimination. As sfi'on as everything has been searched abovo the Andy or 300 lovol, guards will bo stationed so that tho Mexican could not drop below, and then the hunt will be continued further down on the lower levels until tho bottom is reached. The search nbovc the Andy level will bo completed today. Tonight tho York and tho Cottonwood tunnels remained to bo searched, and also a largo stope leading off from tho Parnell. Tho searchers today were surprised that they did not run acroas tho blankets blank-ets which Stefano tnld he carried In to Lopez. Stefano scorns confused about which tunnel he went Into and this is attributed to tho fact that tho Parnell Par-nell Is sometimes known as tho Mlnrilo, because It Is a part of the Minnie workings. work-ings. Ptcfano will bo asked to straighten this matter out by accompanying tho searchers Into tho placo where ho wont with the supplies tomorrow morning. |
