BARNES SAYS ACTION IS TO BE RATIFIED According to Attorney General, Gen-eral, the Matter Is Now Virtually Vir-tually Settled; Utah Proffer Discussed. It was announced yesterday that the atate capltol commission had, at an Informal In-formal meeting held on December 1 decided de-cided to award tho contract for the marble mar-ble to jro into tho new caoltol to the Geor gia Marblo company, at a. price of approximately ap-proximately J181.000. The work given to tho Georgia company, lnclude3 all the marble to bo placed In the building with the exception of that for tho main vestibules, ves-tibules, tho governor's reception room, the chamber of tho house of representatives, tho flenate chamber, the supreme court chamber, tho lavatories and a certain amount of baseboard work on tho ground floor. When questioned last night Attorney General A- It. Barnes, a member of the commission, said: Tho Informal action of the tommls-nlon tommls-nlon will be ratified at tho first meeting meet-ing of that body at which a quorum is present Every actlvo member of the commission, with the exception of Anthon H. Lund, has agreed that tho marble contract ehall bo awarded tho Georgia Marblo company. Those I who acceded to tho Informal contract, were Govornor Spry, M. S. Browning, John Dern, David Mattson and myself. my-self. Three Bids Submitted. Originally thero were three bids submitted for the marble. These were for the Georgia, the Vormont and tho Utah marble, the last named being- made by the BlrdHeye company. The bids were submitted direct to James Stewart & Co., tho general contractors for the building. However, How-ever, tho commission had on understanding under-standing with the contractors that It might add to or deduct from the gonorol contract In accordance -with the price paid for the marble either below or above the amount of the estimate. Those blda were nubmlttcd about six weoks ago. The bid of tho Georgia company, whose representative was on the ground, was mado on a time basis. The Blrdseye company's bid was bo much higher than that of the Georgia company that It was thought that somo error had been mode In compilation. The company sought more time and the Georgia company com-pany consented to extend the tlmo given In Its proposal to December 1. Tho extension was obtained at the solicitation of th capltol commissioners. com-missioners. Authorization Given. When this time came, the commissioners commis-sioners held the meeting, authorising James Stewart & Co. to prooeed with the acceptance of tho Georgia company's com-pany's proposal on the basin of certain cer-tain restrictions these govomlng marble not to bo included in the contract. The bid did not include marble flooring and neither did that of tho local company. Tho figures of tho Georgia company. Including tho columns, col-umns, was $207,029. Tho columns woro -separately llgured at ?30.000. Tho bid of tho Blrdseye company was $615,000, of which ?1C5.000 was for columns. Tho revised bid of tho BIrdseyo company excluded both columns col-umns and flooring and was slightly in cxcesB of $150,000. |
