Show IT HAS THE RABIES. Tho Smoot organ must havo anticipated antici-pated a very sultry day yesterday, and correspondingly it indulged in the froth of rabies to an .unusual extent. It reiterated tho falsity that Dr. Padon had been abusing and vilifying Utah, and that The Tribune had been defending defend-ing him therein. This is such a. stale falsehood that it is surprising to see it 'come forth again, even in a fit of rabies. For, Dr. Padon denies the things charged against him, and The Tribune Relieves in his denial. That is a plain statement of the whole matter, mat-ter, and still, basing its evil-spokon bigotry upon a falsehood, the orga:n states toohshly that because of ;The Tribuuo's disbelief in the organ's lies it is. an "impertinence" for this paper, pa-per, to call attention to tho Chicago Land Show and invite tho .people of Utah to say who thai' tho Stato 6hall be represented thereat. Again, Tho Tribune recently called attention to tho great work being done by the University of Wisconsin, where tho Agricultural College and the Uni versitj" aro united, and spoke of the contention that is proceeding in Oregon as between the Agricultural College and the Universit', which is, to a certain cer-tain extent, paralyzing the efforts of both.. Wo have had something of tho same sort m Utah. Our conclusion was, and has been for a long timo, frequently frequent-ly expressed that Jt would be bettor for tho Stato of Oregon and for tho Stato of Utab to nnito in each its University Uni-versity and Agricultural College. In view of tho great fame that attaches to tho work of tho Wisconsin University, Univer-sity, where these institutions are consolidated, con-solidated, we contrasted tho work of other States which .have separate institutions insti-tutions for tho University and the Agricultural College, and stated that in no such State was oither-institution ever heard from outsido tho State's boundaries. And this is hold by the Smoot organ to bo an "unjust blow at Utah's two great educational insti-tutionsl insti-tutionsl " With every new depth of degradation degrada-tion to which the Smoot organ descends, de-scends, we charitably conclude that it has reached tho extreme; but it appears ap-pears that it is able to find new depths and new degradation with every succeeding suc-ceeding issue. Tho organ made much of tho criticisms criti-cisms which. Senator Gallinger of Vermont Ver-mont put upon Prosident Wilson. In that editorial Senator Gallinger was represented as a great hero, putting to discomfiture tho President of tho United States. And yet in another editorial edi-torial in tho same column, it finds that Senator Gallinger is a choap skate, who knows nothing about Congressional pro-coduro pro-coduro or public propriety. Speaking of the franking scandal in connection with the sending through the mails under un-der Congressional franks of a document docu-ment which had been altered after the Senate had authorized its use as a public pub-lic document, tho organ says: The effort to blacken Senator Lodge and others who properly used their frank-Ins frank-Ins privilege to disseminate Information as to tho Injurious effects of free sugar can have no effect among those who know the custom. Upon those whose readiness to think evil Is accentuated by a concomitant) Ignorance, an Impression will bo created. The matter is being sent thus broadcast for consumption In the rural districts where the uninformed are easily Impressed. Unfortunately, It Is aided by others whose round of dally duties should equip them with at least the elementals of governmental Information Informa-tion but which apparently has not done so. That is tho organ's view. It is also a dirty slur 6u tho Associated Press service. Whether it is Smoot 's view or not is not certain, though it may be presumed to be so. But it is not Senator Sena-tor Gallingcr's view. When Senator Gallinger was on the stand in tho lobby lob-by inquiri', this falsely styled "custom" "cus-tom" was brought out. Senator Overman Over-man asked him for his opinion on the act of changing a public document after aft-er it had been ordered printed by the Senate. Mr. Gallinger replied, "I would consider that absolutely indefensible, inde-fensible, if not criminal." And yet, for the purpose of excusing that indefensible in-defensible if not criminal act, the Smoot organ holds that Senator Gallinger Gallin-ger is an ignoramus, who does not have any idea of the "elementals of governmental govern-mental information!" That is, Senator Gallinger is a great statesman and champion when ho assails as-sails President Wilson; but when he denounces an act in which Apostle Smoot is said to havo part, Mr. Gallinger Gallin-ger is guilty of "concomitant ignorance" ignor-ance" and knows nothing about the "elementals of governmental information." informa-tion." Wc think that will do for one day. |
