Show HYPNOTISM TRIED 01 AJRUG FIEND J. S. Barker of Salt Lake Makes Satisfactory Test at Ogden. Special to The Tribune. OGDEN. May 20. An experiment In tho euro of drug fiends by the use of hypnotic hyp-notic suggestion was given a secret test by the police officials of this city yesterday yester-day when Albert Davis, who Is doing sixtv days for vagrancy, was placed under the hypnotic Influence of J. S. Barker, a Salt Lake man. Barker declares that he has been very successful In this line of work and asked tho local officials to give him an opportunity to demonstrate his methods. meth-ods. The experiment was performed In thc presence of Chief of Police W. I. Norton, Police Commissioner T. S. Browning, the Rev. Frank G. Brainord, Judge W. TL Rccdcr and Dr. B. P. Mills. As the experiment requires the consent of the subject. Davis was chosen because two other users of tho drug rofused to undergo under-go the trial. Thc method of tho Salt Lake man Is to first secure the statement of the drug user that he desires to quit the habit. Then tho man Is placed in a hypnotic sleep, after which tho operator tells him of tho dangers and terrors of the drug habit and makes other strong suggestions to the hypnotized patient. When Davis was awakened he declared to those present that he had heard every word spoken by Barker and that ho be'-llevod be'-llevod he would never use drugs again. Davis will undergo further treatment next Sunday and It Is expected that other users of drugs will submit to the trial. The local officials are willing to give Mr. Barker's method a fair test |
