Show Certificates Are Issued to 244 Eighth Grade and 1 14 Ninth Grade Pupils. EXERCISES ARE HELD AT THE SALT LAKE THEATER Graduating Classes Present Excellent Ex-cellent Appearance; Attendance At-tendance Large. The annual promotion exercises of the different public schools or the city were brought to a triumphant close yesterday forenoon and afternoon, when splendid Joint programmes were carried out by the eighth and nlnlh grade graduates of the Jefferson and Bryant schools at the Suit Lake theater. Two hundred and forty-four forty-four pupils of tho eighth grades of both schools and 114 pupils of the ninth grades received certificates of promotion to inx. high school. The graduation exercises of the ninth grade pupils represented an entirely new feature. Heretofore the eighth grade has been the highest in the public schools of tho city. Under a new precedent established by tho board of education, a successfully completed ninth grade is practically equivalent to tho first year's preliminary work at any accredited high school of the state. Both graduating classes presented an excellent appearance in modest costumes of harmonious colors among the boys and the girls. Both classes carried car-ried out thalr respective programmes in an artistic and meritorious manner, well bespeaking the prosress made during dur-ing the school year under the carenii direction of able principals and teachers. Mottoes of Classes. An Interesting feature of both programmes pro-grammes was u demonstration of the striking iork done by the graduating pupils of both schools In the study of German. The eighth grades took as a class motto "WIe die Arbeit, so der Lohn," which, literally translated into English, means "As the Work, so the Reward." while the motto of the ninth grades was "Uebung Macht den Mcls-ter." Mcls-ter." or. in English. "Practice Makes Perfect." During both morning and afternoon aft-ernoon exercises the most successful numbers on either programme were either sung or spoken in German, showing remarkable re-markable accomplishment for one year's wrirk. Both programmes were carried out under un-der tho joint supervision of W. J. McCoy, Mc-Coy, principal of the Jefferson school, and F. D Keeler, principal of the Bryant school, assisted by Lydia Palmer Leah H. Arnold, Jessie L. Hutchinson. J. Fred Anderson. Laura Malin and Marjorlo Simmons, teachers of the Jefferson, and Eva Eldredge. Sarah M. Gillette. Mela Bocttcher. Sadlo A. Rosser Elizabeth Fitzgerald. Minnie- C. Cassldy. Edwin S. Du Poncet, Alma D. Whltaker, Winona S, Ncedham. Emma M. Ivie, Florence Parry and E, W. Gessweln, teachers of tho Bryant school. D. H. Chrlstensen, city superintendent of schools, made "tho address of greeting at both morning and afternoon exercises, while Mathonlhah Thomas and S. C. Park of the city board of education made the presentation of certificates to the eighth and ninth grade graduates respectively. Many Good-byes Said. As the exercises were concluded, an informal farowcll reception among the pupils, teachers, principals and higher officers took place. Good-byes, handshaking, hand-shaking, furtive glances and glad reminiscences re-miniscences held full sway, constituting a parting not without Its sad coloring.
