Show CONVICT LABOR ON ROADS. With the coining of the storm of last Friday, tho convicts that . have been at work from a camp in Box folder fol-der county on the roads in-that region have been withdrawn lo the ponitcn-tiarv. ponitcn-tiarv. -The talk now is, that, the convict con-vict road work will bp transferred-lo points in "the southern part of the State, where road work is much.ncod-cd.: much.ncod-cd.: But. if so transferred. Iho convict con-vict camp will have to bo south of tho rim of the basin, for the cold in the elevated south plateaus is often even greater than in this immediate basin. it is certain that much road work is required in tho Dixie country, and it would be lo (lie advantage of. that region, reg-ion, ns well as to the advantage of the State, in tlic employment of its convicts, con-victs, to have a convict camp somewhere some-where in that mild region, where good road wqrk could be prosecuted all winter win-ter to the public advantage. Another place where road work could be advantageously done is in the Green Kivcr country at several points. Tho road from Moab to the railroad needs a good dcnl of work. So do the roads in the Emery county region, and on both sides of Green Uiver. A good rond lo the San Juan oil ; region would be a great help also to the; trade of this city, and to the advantage of Utah generally. That oil region now is supplied from the Colorado side, but it ought to bo supplied from this side, because the oil fields arc in Utah. The road could to advantage, be put through Wayne countv across the Colorado Colo-rado To the San Juan river, and follow up that river to the oil fields. Or. it might go in from the Moab side. The demand for good road' work in all that southern region is very grcnt, aud there need be no fear that the roads will all be put in good condition either this year or the next, or for inanv vears to come. The demand w.H be constant, the work is beneficial, and no time should be lost in establishing the camps in such southern regions ol the State as will be found most im-mediately im-mediately profitable for that work. Warden Pratt has returned from the East; and wc expect to sec this matter taken up and pushed by him. in good practical shape, with the least possible delay. - |
