Show WAS IN THE HARNESS UNTIL DEATH APPEOACHED WASHINGTON, June 2S. Senator McEncry Mc-Encry left Washington Saturday evening, only a few hours beforo the session of congress closed. He appeared to be In ho best of health. His son. Dr. McEnery. started for New Orleans lBst night upon receipt of a telegram saying his father was ill. Thb present term of Senator McEnery, which was his third, would not have expired ex-pired until March 3. 1915. During his service serv-ice he was known as an Independent Democrat who voted frequently with the Republicans. This was true particularly In tariff legislation. Throughout the last two revisions re-visions of tho tariffs he contended Jealously Jeal-ously for tho protection of cane sugar interests in-terests and was willing to make any concessions con-cessions to the majority party In return for favors shown lo him. At times Ms attltudeP provoked some criticism from hla party associates, but this never swerved him from his Independent Inde-pendent course. The fact that Senator McEncry was afflicted af-flicted with almost total deafness prevented pre-vented him ftom taking an active part in debates.
