Show Big Building Is Equipped With Every Convenience for Athletic Exercise. THOUSANDS INSPECT BEAUTIFUL STRUCTURE Formal Opening of Institution Reveals Thoroughness of Construction. Big, airy, sanitary and complete, is the new Desorct gymnasium, which was thrown open for Inspection for tho first time Tuesday. The doors were thrown open at 12 o'clock and until II o'clock Tuesday night the handsome building was the center of attraction for large crowds of Salt Lake people, among whom were prominent buslneso and professional men and educators. From 2:30 until fi.-r.O in the afternoon the Shuberl string quartotlo dispensed music. In the ovonlnp; beginning at 7:30. tho Salt Lake theater orchestra, directed by Fred Mldglcv, gave a programme of musical numbers. Tuesday evening Governor William Spry and Mayor John 13 ran a ford wero the guests of honor at the new gymnasium. Many other city and state officials wcro also in attendance. On hand to greet tho vlsitora were more than 100 guides, who escorted the people around In groups of Icn. Leading off from the main floor to the basement from tho north end is the boys' locker room, which contains 300 steel lockers, thirty-six inches high, for the exclusive use of the boys. Tho dressing rooms are all constructed wllh special shower baths and will be used largely for the accommodation of visiting athletic teams. There arc filters on this floor, through which all I he wator used In the building passes. In tho squth end of the lower tloor aro nix bowling alleys, which will be used exclusively by women and girls on certain days, llnncr the east sidewalk are the barber shop and lounging loung-ing rooms. Swimming Pool. Adjoining tho lockers Is the steam room and many showers. Tho pool will contain 90.000 gallons of filtered water, which will bo healed to a temperature of 72 degrees, It Is equipped with two spring boards and two swimming trolleys to aid the beginner In keeping above water. Above this gallery Is the running run-ning track, fourteen and ono-half laps to the mile, laid with linoleum cork, Inclined In-clined and concaved so that the speedy runner will have no trouhlo In "taking the connirs." A spiral stairway lends to the running trnck and there are brass sliding polos for the athletes to use in making a' hnsly descent.
