Show HANNAH CAST0 SHAFER, PIONEER WOMAN, CALLED Mrs. Hannah Casto Shafer. a pioneer resident of this city, and widow of John Shafer. died shortly after 7 o'clock Tuesday Tues-day evening at the age of S4 years. She was born in Indiana June 27, 1826, and camo to Salt Lake City with the pioneers ln 1S19. She lived for some time at Nauvoo. 111., beforo it was settled by the Mormons, and an island in the Mississippi Missis-sippi river still bears her maiden name, Casto. having been named after her family. Mrs. Shafer's family established the first nursery and fruit trees ln the upper Mississippi country. Mrs. Shafer is survived by four sons and two daughters, Orson W.. John H.. Oliver and Frank Shafer and Mrs W. R. Smith and Mrs. John W. Snelt |
