Indications are that the final match in the stato championship golf tourney will be played between J. V. Salisbury, present pres-ent state golf champion, and F. E. McGurrin. Mc-Gurrin. three times champion of Utah. With the exception of one match, the play in the state tournument now on at the Country club links Js down to tho semi-finals, with both champions still In the game. The first and second rounds have been completed, with the exception of one match In the second round, and tho seml-llnals will be played on Saturday, Satur-day, with tho final match cither on Saturday Sat-urday or Sundnj. Both Champions Win. Interest centeerd In tho matches between be-tween McGurrin and Jack Gilmer, and Salisbury and Jack Gilmer In tho first round. Last year Jack Gilmer defeated McGurrin In the socond round of the championship lourney. McGurrin attributing attrib-uting his defeat to a sprained wrist. Gilmer Gil-mer has been playing splendid golf, and felt confident of winning. McGurrin displayed dis-played Ills old-time skill and steadiness, and did not let his opponent win a hole In tho enUro match. Tho match between Salisbury and Jay Gilmer was very close, and II took an extra hole to decide It. Salisbury was two down, with three to go, and took tho next holo In a beautiful five, leaving leav-ing him one down and two to go. Both drove well to tho eighth green, Gilmer being closer to the hole. Salisbury's second shot was too short for putting, and Gilmer lay his ball within fiftcon Inches of tho hole. Salisbury mlssod his third, and this was Gilmer's opportunity to win the-match H; missed tho putt, however, halving the hole, and standing one up and one to play. Salisbury made tho ninth hole In four. Gilmer taking six. This mado It necessary to plav the nineteenth hole, which Salisbury took In four, winning tho match. Thp matches In the second round were never In doubt for a moment. Salisbury had Halo down nt the end of the first nine holes, and Hale acknowledged his defeat. Tho match between Stclncr and Gemmcll was postponed on account of the illness of tho latter, and will be played some day during this week. Interest in Somi-FInals. The semi-finals, which will be played on Saturday next, will bring out some of the test golf in the history or tho club. The matches will bo at thirty-six holes, testing tho endurance as well as skill of rhe players. Salisbury ought to have an easy timo with the winner of tho Steiner-Gcmmell match, and tho real match will be between Taylor and McGurrin. Mc-Gurrin. Taylor has been playing par golf for some time, and a3 McGurrin always al-ways plays his best game when under fiio, tho contest promises to be a warm one from start to finish. A number of the rounds were played In bogey or under, and as tho course was not In good condition, the scores compare com-pare favorably with those made by the best players on eastern courses, which are kept In perfect condition.
