Show TAX3S AND TITHES. The church oian has had a good deal to say, and has said it falsely and maliciously, ma-liciously, about, taxation and public expenditures ex-penditures under the American administration. admin-istration. It has claimed that the American parly has made constant increases in-creases in ci 1 3- taxations, which is not true, .and that it has wrongfully and corruptly dealt with puplic expenditures, expendi-tures, which is slander and1 falsehood combined. , In it all there is nothing to be gained from getting the church organ 's. malignant malig-nant and twisted view. It disapproves everything that the American parly has done, no matter how much the doing of it has redounded to the public advantage. ad-vantage. "What, then, does it approve'" What, is its ideal in the obtaining of money from the public and handling that money? The answer is, lhe tithing tith-ing system. It is in complete and feverishly anxious accord with that. 1 1 defends it from all attacks, soothing the contributors to the tithing fund with the cheering hope that what thoy loso in this world will be more than made up to them in the next, and insults in-sults this community at largo bjr insisting in-sisting that, though two million dollars dol-lars a year is filched from Utah's community com-munity wealth to be directed into alien channels, it is nobody's business what is done with this tithe money except those who contribute it; and if any of theso contributors asks about what becomes be-comes of this titho money, he soon finds out that ii is none of his business either. This immense tithe of two million dollars a year is sent to tho Salt Lake headquarters of the church, and there it is lost sight of. J3ut enough about it is known to show that it is used to make the central hierarchy rich, and to enable them and their numerous and lawless families to wear purple anil line linen and to' fare sumpluously every day. JSnough is known to make it clear that no matter how poor a man may be when becomes to the first presidency, presi-dency, he becomes thoreupon a multimillionaire multi-millionaire at once; and no matter how insignificant in lhe business world he was before, he immediately becomes be-comes a magnified octopus, controlling vast business ' interests at immense profit to himself. And this not alone in this country, but in Canada and Mexico, Mex-ico, lie is able to divert from Utah to other States and to Canada and Mexico, Mex-ico, A-ast and continuous streams of money, contributed by well-meaning dupes in Utah, to this upbuilding of enterprises en-terprises for his own benefit and the profit of his favorites. Thus Utah is mado to upbuild other Slates, and even foreign countries, to the immense advantage ad-vantage .of the heads of the church, who make no accounting to any ono, much less to those whom they thus 3'carly rob of tho money thus fraudulently obtained and used. And this is the sort of obtaining money from the people, and tho unaccounted, unac-counted, personal and impudently arrogant ar-rogant use jnado of that 11101103' whicl lhe church 'organ approves. On the othdr hand, the American party officials receive the city's revenue rev-enue puhlicl-, accouiting for it all openly, honestly, and according to law. The money is fcpent right here at home, giving employ at fair wages to residents, resi-dents, and the result being vast and beneficent public improvements, to be seen and known of all. Very naturally an organ which, would approve of and defend tho former method, meth-od, tho irresponsible, arrogant, 'and avaricious av-aricious raking in of tho shock els to the amount of two million dollars a year, spending vast sums in various countries for the personal benefit and' advantage of tho chief priests and their friends, and arrogant ly refusing lo account to their squeezed dupes for their taking over lhe money to themselves, them-selves, would condemn the- honest, public, pub-lic, and beneficial handling of t'hc people's peo-ple's money, as the Americans have done. Jt isn't used to this way of dealing with people 'and cash. Jls instinct in-stinct is lo rob, hide, a;id cover up, and it is unable to understand why every one doesn't want to do this, even as flic hierarchy does. But grabbing, extortion and callous, impudent, indifference indif-ference lo the just claim of those who contribute money to know what is done with, it-, as" is the priestly custom, is the reverse of the American idea. And the Americans can well afford to let tho tilhlug-gra.ft organ howl for the evil darkness when nothing but honest light and open dealing should rule. |
