Show WIND AND ICE FLOES CHECK MIGHTY NIAGARA NIAGARA FALLS, N". Y.. Feb. II. Only a tiny rivulet, not deep or wwlft enough to carry a pulp log over tho brink is flowing over tho American side of Niagara falls. A strong northeast wind, which has blown since Friday, has held back tho water and allowed the Ice to gain a foothold. Two employees of tho American reservation walked from Prospect Pros-pect point nearly to Bath Island this morning. A groat wall of lee runs from tho head of Goat Island to the American mainland, through which only tiny streams are ablo to trickle. This wall has even encroached on the Canadian channel, extending out some 200 feet beyond thc Third Sister island and greatly diminishing tho flow over thc Horseshoe. Only tho very apex of the Canadian falls Is left, and that Is robbed of half of Its flow. Tho gorge below be-low Is choked nnd the rapids have lost their fury, while tho whirlpool 13 barely In motion. This Is only the third time that this combination of wind and Ico has thus ( affected tho falls sinco the whllo man came here. |
