Show LICENSES RUN DOT FIRST OF JANUARY First Time in History of City That, This Has Been the Case. APPROXIMATELY 4500 PERSONS ARE AFFECTED Result Will Bo an Unprecedented Unprece-dented Rush Early in j New Year. . i Ever- license in tho city will cspiro January 1. License Collector Samuel I. Godman announced Tuesday. There aro approximate' -1500 licenses. This will be the first time in tho history of tho city that all tho licenses have thus simultaneously si-multaneously run out. License Collector Godman expects that us a result of the simultaneous ex-niration. ex-niration. of the licenses, much of Salt Lake City's business will bo oporaled temporarily without a license, and in anticipation of this has prepared tho renewal application blanks and is mailing mail-ing them out. All tho licenseo has to do is to fill in tho spaco for the timo for which the renewal is desired and tho basis of assessment, and return the application blank to the license collector col-lector with tho amount of tho license. "But I'll bet. despite all this, that one-third, or maybo one-half, of Salt Lake City's business men, amonablo to tho licenso tax will bo operating without ono tho first of tho year, and will, therefore, technically bo criminals." declared de-clared Mr. Godman Tuesday. "Well, tho tardy ones will bo given until tho fifteenth of tho month to pay up, anil if they don't, prosecutions will bo instituted in-stituted on tho charge of violating tho license ordinance for operating without a licenso." How Classified. The licenses aro classified as merchant mer-chant 's licenses and miscellaneous, tn th" former class aro 2000 and in tho latter 2?iOO. Tho collected revenno from licenses will amount to $210,000. almost $9000 loss than tho licenso oolceted in 1907. There aro pevernl reasons for this. Under Un-der the now telephone ordinauco recently recent-ly passed, giving iho telephone companies com-panies the option of paying tho license or turning over tc tho city at tho end of the year 1 per cent of the gross earnings for the previous year, in lieu of the license, which latter option thoy chose, nothing can bo collected from tho telephone companies for 190S until thoir books are audited and tho amount duo from them determined. This will tako until tho latter part of January or tho first of February. Another reason rea-son is that tho Utah Light and Railway companv paid the licenso upon its cars for IfiOS in 1907. Then, too, the fact I hat all licenses expire on January 1 has prevented m.mv porsons from renewing, as was formerly done, for a period extending beyond tho first of January, during the present and preceding months. This licenso is based upon tho number num-ber of cars. $20 for each car in regular regu-lar operalion. Tho Compaq- pays li-crnso li-crnso upou onlv sixty-fivo cars.whilo th license collector contends that tho county assessment is upon something liko 350 cars. An offor't will bo made the first of tho year, it is predicted, to raise the assessment as to tho number num-ber of oars. License Collector Godman savs the company should pa- a license upon at least 100 cars. |
