Professor Cummings and party left Bluff Tuesday afternoon, July 2, and made camp in Butler's Wash, about six mllos from tho town. The proposed trip to Moonlight Moon-light has been temporarily abandoned on account of the high water In tho San Juan river- Tho tlood condition is lasting last-ing later this summer than It has In years, and thero is still snow In tho mountains to melt. It Is at present hazardous haz-ardous to try to swim horsos across the swift, turbulent half-mllo of water with Its quicksand bars. The Journey will consequently probably prob-ably bo Into the Elk rldgo after Butler's But-ler's canyon and Camp Wash aro studied and mapped. A culture map Is being compiled, which makes the movements of tho party rather slow, as each canyon of tho San Juan drainage must be separately studied stud-ied nnd outlined Professor Hewett left Tuesday to start the three mon from Harvard at similar work In McElmo canyon. They will Join with this party later. Professor Hewett roturns Saturday to moot Professor Cummings Cum-mings in Bluff, to purchase moro supplies sup-plies and secure guides for the trip into the Elk mountains. |
