Tho year 1907 marks the Somi-Cen-tcnnial of "Good Old Guckouhcimcr Rye.'1 For half a century, "since 1857,' ' ono Binglo family has manufactured manufac-tured aud sold this world-famous product. prod-uct. During this timo sons have taken tho places of the founders of tho busi-nossi, busi-nossi, Through all vicissitudes Uio purity and quality of the product hna boon kept up. This record has fow parallels in the history of tho United States. In tho year 1857, in the City of Pittsburg, Pitts-burg, the sign of "Wholesale Liquors' ' on tho front of an unpretentious littlo store, announced to tho world tho beginning be-ginning of a houso that was doBtined to becomo famous. Asher Guckenheimer and his half-brother, Samuel Wert-heimor, Wert-heimor, owned this littlo store. Theso young men littlo dreamed at that time of tho va8t proportions to which their littlo business venture would oxpand or of the long series of years during which it would prospor. Two Moro Brothers Join. Tho present firm namo, "A. Guckenheimer Gucken-heimer & Brothers,' ' was adopted in tho oarly 60s, following tho admission -of Emanuel Wcrtheimer and Isaac Wcrthoimor, to tho business. They were full brothers of tho junior owner, and half-brothers of tho sonior owner of tho business. c The firm obtained control of the entire en-tire output of tho distillery of TI103. Boll & Co.. at Freoport, Pa., whose whiskies were then famous throughout that section for thoir quality. Whon Thos. Bell died, some years later, in 18G5, tho firm of A. Guckonhoimcr & Bros, bought tho distillery, with its brands, and tho namo of Bell waB dropped and tho namo of Guckonhoimcr substituted, tho quality of tho whisTcy beiug carefully kept at its high level. At tho timo tho distillery changed ownors its output was about 200 barrels bar-rels of whisk' a year, which waB sold principally through commission houses in Philadelphia. In 1868 the firm also bought a dis-tillor' dis-tillor' in Upper Sandusky, Ohio, in which a whisky was manufactured under un-der the brand of "Wyandotte." But the distance oft this distillery from Pittsburg made it hard to bestow upon it tho proper amount of attention and it was later abandoned. In 1S76 A. Guckenheimer & Bros, bought the distillery of McGonegal, TIclmbold & Co., at Buffalo Tp., Butler county, Pa., and changed tho firm name to tho Pennsylvania Distilling Co., under un-der which namo it is at present operated, oper-ated, manufacturing the famous "Montrose "Mon-trose " brand. Tho constant growth of the demand for Guckenheimer Rye made inadequate inade-quate the old ,Bell Disti)ler3r, which had been built in 1S15, and a new distillery dis-tillery was- decided upon. Elaborate plans were drawn. From theso plans was built the present distillery, which is acknowledeged by liquor exports to be one of the most perfect on the American continent. Scarcely had the work boon completed com-pleted on'the new plant when the Pennsylvania Penn-sylvania Distilling Co. plant burned out. This distillery was immediately rebuilt along tho modern liues of the Guckenheimer distillery. Close to Perfection. Asher Guckenheimer, one of tho original origi-nal founders of tho firm, ripe in 3'ears and honors, died as a result of an accident acci-dent in October, 1003. ' A short time before his death he had seen Guckenheimer Gucken-heimer Rye score the highest Tecord at the World's Columbian Exposition. This score, QQVi out of a possible 100 points, was made on the most rigid standard possible, the jurors proclaiming proclaim-ing Guclcenheiraer Ryo to be the highest high-est tvpe of American distillation. Emanuel Wertheimer, who had becomo be-como president of tho Freoport, Pa., A from the firm a few vears ago. Simultaneously with this event sons of the members of tho firm wore taken into partnership. They wero Isaao Gnckonheimerj son of Asher Guckenheimer: Moms S. Wertheimer, son of Samuel Wertheimer, and Leon Wertheimer, son of Isaac Wertheimer. Tho Greafc Distillery.
