Show WOULD IT WERE BUT A DREAM! "There is no 'Mormon problem,' except ex-cept in the delirious visions of anti-' anti-' Mormon' maniacs," asserts tho Dcs-eret Dcs-eret News. Was it a "delirious vision" when Joseph F. Smith testified to the. world that he is a willful breaker of the law of tho State and tho rule of his church? Was that the sort of thing that proceeded pro-ceeded Xrom the mouths of tho prophets when, in last April conference, thoy confessed to the country that there are new cases of polygamous marriage within with-in the Mormon, organization? Was it merely delirium when the president of the Mormon church printed an editorial in the Improvement Era, over his own signature, practically commanding Mormon Mor-mon Democrats to vole the Republican ticket? Was thero anything intangible about the recent Roberts defiance of the law and decency, which was authoritatively authorita-tively mado in behalf of the polygamous Mormon church? is thero anything dreamlike in tho sworn assertion of church officials that women who have been cajoled into polygamy since the manifesto" are not wives at. all; neither in tho eyes of the church nor under the law of the land? Do people indulge in mere pipe dreams when they accept the confessions of the high priests that thoy aro spreading illegitimacy throughout the communit'? These are but a fow of the questions which compose the problem which confronts con-fronts the people of Utah. They are all connected with and fostered by tho Mormon church. Therefore there is a "Mormon problem; " and a very serious one at that. But the Ne's desires that there shall be silent acquiescence with the church on these matters. That is the price which it has fixed upon the commodity Of peace. It would parcel out individual freedom at the cost of individual honor. It would gTant community com-munity quietude at the sacrifice of community com-munity honest' and patriotism. The church organ would have law-abiding citizens cover up or countenance tho hierarchical crimes as a condition upon which they might be permitted to live in accord with the priesthood. ' It is absurd a shameless, impudent attempt at deception for the Deserefc Xews to deny that there is n Mormon problem to be solved here. The church leaders are continually forcing it upon the public mind. They are eternally announcing an-nouncing their determination to continue in violation of law and moral deccnc3 Tho fact is that the Mormon problem has grown to greater proportions than ever, since certain political protection procured by means of tho most brutal and dishonest machination has ernbold- oncd them to defy civilization more arrogantly and offensively than before. Tho hiorarchy of the Mormon church has again assumed the " what-arc-you-going-to-do-about-it" attitude, and in most vicious determination to trample under foot every vestige of community uprightness, if possible. And that is tho aggravated Mormon problem that must and shall bo settled, notwithstanding notwithstand-ing tho impudent News donials of ils existence. The organ of tho Mormon lord deceives nobody horcabouts; and the continued publication of the honest facts in tho case, by The Tribuno and tho fow othor patriotic journals which have taken up the question with an m-crjnquorablo m-crjnquorablo determination to solve it once and for all, has made it quite impossible im-possible for the News to fool many people peo-ple abroad. Tho good work will go on. Utah will bo built up as novcr boforc but not through tho degradation of her integrity under tho heel of tho polygamous polyga-mous Smith church. |
